Biotech Takes the Spotlight: New EU Biotech and Life Sciences Alliance Launches in Strasbourg

A new chapter for European innovation began on 7 July, with the launch of the EU Biotech and Life Sciences Alliance. The official launch brought together MEPs from across the political spectrum to champion one of Europe’s most dynamic and fast-evolving sectors.

The atmosphere in the room was one of energy and shared purpose as Claire Skentelbery, Director General of EuropaBio, opened the session with a compelling overview of the European biotech landscape. Her presentation set the tone for a forward-looking discussion on the Alliance’s mission: to ensure Europe remains a global leader in biotech and life sciences.

Co-chair Stine Bosse led the conversation on the Alliance’s goals, followed by Renew Europe’s Morten Løkkegaard, who offered a deep dive into the ITRE committee’s biotech INI report. But it wasn’t just about policy papers and reports; MEPs brought personal reflections to the table, highlighting the real-world impact of biotech, from personalized medicine to equitable access to innovation.

MEPs acknowledged the challenge of keeping up with scientific breakthroughs and emphasized the need for continuous knowledge sharing to craft smart, future-proof legislation.

As the meeting wrapped up, MEP Bosse extended a warm invitation to colleagues from all political groups and committees to join the Alliance. The message was clear: biotech is a shared European priority.
